The Meaning of the Dormition of the Theotokos Icon

The Dormition of the Theotokos, celebrated on August 15 in the Church calendar, is one of the Twelve Great Feasts. Dormition means “falling asleep” and refers to the Mother of God’s real death.

The Orthodox Church celebrates her passage into life with her Son, who receives her soul and glorifies her in body and soul. Her hope, like ours, rests in Christ’s victory over death.

The traditional Dormition composition shows the Theotokos resting on her bier while Christ holds her soul, represented as a small swaddled figure. The image recalls the mother who once held Christ now being received by Him, and invites trust in His saving love.
