The Meaning of the Saint Catherine of Alexandria Icon
Saint Catherine of Alexandria is honored as a Great Martyr. Her traditional Life describes a young woman of noble birth and exceptional learning who confessed Christ before imperial authority and answered pagan philosophers with wisdom and courage.
According to that account, the wheel prepared for her torture was destroyed through an angel’s intervention. She was subsequently beheaded rather than renounce Christ. Church tradition also recounts the miraculous translation of her relics to Mount Sinai, where the monastery bearing her name preserves her memory.
An icon of Saint Catherine recalls learning placed in the service of faith, and a steadfast love for Christ stronger than fear.
