The Meaning of the Saint Demetrios of Thessaloniki Icon
Saint Demetrios of Thessaloniki is honored as a Great Martyr and Myrrh-gusher. His traditional Life recounts that he held public office, openly taught the Christian faith, and refused to participate in persecution.
Imprisoned for his confession of Christ, he was killed with spears in 306. The Church remembers him among the military saints, and Thessaloniki has long honored him as its heavenly protector. Accounts of his intercession form an enduring part of the city’s Christian tradition.
An icon of Saint Demetrios recalls courage grounded in faithfulness to Christ. His witness encourages steadfastness when the demands of worldly authority conflict with the Gospel.
