The Meaning of the Saint John Chrysostom Icon

Saint John Chrysostom, whose epithet means “Golden Mouth,” is one of the Three Holy Hierarchs. Born in fourth-century Antioch, he became renowned for preaching that joined careful attention to Scripture with practical concern for the Christian life.

As Archbishop of Constantinople, he called both clergy and laypeople to repentance, generosity, and care for the poor. His ministry brought conflict and exile; he died in exile in 407.

The Divine Liturgy that bears his name remains central to Orthodox worship, and his Paschal Homily is traditionally proclaimed at Pascha. His icon recalls a shepherd whose teaching continues to invite the Church to live the Gospel.
