The Meaning of the Saint Mark the Evangelist Icon
Saint Mark the Evangelist is honored as the author of the Gospel according to Mark. Associated with both Peter and Paul, he is remembered in Church tradition for recording the preaching of Saint Peter.
His Gospel proclaims Jesus Christ through His ministry, Passion, and Resurrection, calling its hearers to faith and discipleship. Orthodox tradition also honors Mark as the founder of the Church in Alexandria, where he preached and suffered martyrdom.
An icon of Saint Mark recalls the apostolic proclamation carried from one generation to the next. His witness invites us to hear the Gospel attentively and follow the Lord with courage.
