The Meaning of the Annunciation Icon

The Annunciation, celebrated on March 25 in the Church calendar, is one of the Twelve Great Feasts. It recalls the Archangel Gabriel’s announcement to the Virgin Mary that she would bear Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

The Gospel of Luke records Mary’s willing response to God’s word. Through the Holy Spirit, the eternal Son takes flesh from her and becomes truly human while remaining truly God. The Church honors her as Theotokos, the Mother of God, because the One she bears is God incarnate.
