The Meaning of the Saint George Icon
Saint George is honored as a Great Martyr and Victory-bearer. His traditional Life recounts his service as a soldier, his confession of Christ during Diocletian’s persecution, and his martyrdom by beheading around 303.
The familiar scene of George overcoming a dragon refers to a miracle preserved in Orthodox hagiographic tradition. It also expresses the victory of God’s grace over evil. The saint’s courage and deliverance of others point to Christ, the source of his strength.
An icon of Saint George encourages courage in the spiritual life, fidelity under pressure, and confidence in Christ’s victory. It calls us to perseverance rather than fear.
