The Meaning of the Saint Stephen Icon

Saint Stephen is honored as the Protomartyr and Archdeacon of the Church. Acts describes him as full of faith and the Holy Spirit, chosen among the Seven and appointed through the apostles’ prayer and laying on of hands.

After his arrest, Stephen bore witness before the council to God’s work in Israel and to Jesus Christ. He saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at God’s right hand. As he was stoned, he prayed to the Lord Jesus and asked forgiveness for his persecutors.

His icon recalls faithful witness joined to mercy, even in suffering.
