The Meaning of the The Prodigal Son Icon

Christ’s parable of the Prodigal Son, in Luke 15, tells of a son who leaves home, wastes his inheritance, and falls into poverty. Coming to his senses, he returns to his father and confesses his sin.

The father sees him from afar, runs to embrace him, and welcomes him with a robe, a ring, and a feast. His compassion reveals God’s mercy toward those who return in repentance. The elder son’s response also calls us to rejoice when another is restored.

Remembered on a preparatory Sunday before Great Lent, this icon invites repentance without despair and trust in the Father’s abundant mercy.
