The Meaning of the Virgin Mary Pantanassa Icon
Pantanassa means “Queen of All,” a title of the Mother of God. The celebrated Pantanassa icon at Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos dates to the seventeenth century.
The monastery records testimonies of help and healing, particularly in serious illness, associated with prayer before this icon and its copies. Orthodox Christians ask the Theotokos to intercede with her Son, recognizing God as the source of healing and mercy.
An icon of the Mother of God under this title invites prayer in times of suffering and trust in Christ. It expresses hope in God’s compassion, without making a promise of a particular outcome.
