The Meaning of the Theotokos Icon

The Virgin Mary is depicted holding Christ, yet her posture directs attention not to herself but to Him.

The title Theotokos means “God-bearer.” It affirms that the One she bore is truly God incarnate.

In many traditional depictions, she gestures toward Christ, silently proclaiming: “Do whatever He tells you.”

Her garments are deep red or blue, symbolizing both humanity and divine grace. The three stars often present on her veil signify her perpetual virginity — before, during, and after the birth of Christ.

The Theotokos is honored not apart from Christ, but because of Him. Her icon reveals the mystery of the Incarnation — that God truly took flesh.

To place her icon in the home is to remember that salvation entered the world through humility, obedience, and grace.
